Med School Status: Early Labor
I re-took doula training last week, and now everything looks like a birth. Did you know that incarcerated women in the state of Washington still (STILL!) give birth in 4-point restraints, literally chained to a bed? I expect to volunteer with this population this year at the UW med center.
Here's what's going on with my med school application.
I got my MCAT score: 31 "O". The 31 is okay, because anything over 30 is okay, and because my scores across the subjects were even (11 verbal, 10 bio, 10 physics). The highest you can get is 45, which nobody has done in about 15 years. The "O" in essay writing is embarrassing, as in: am I actually a native English speaker? The range is J through T. I had thought I'd be about an R. Oh well.
I added UC Davis to my list, so now I've got 34 schools. Here's that map again:

Why am I applying to so many? My GPA is about a 3.2. Most of it was cast in stone by 1988, so it is what it is. Plus I'm, you know, over 40.
AMCAS, which serves as a first application for most schools, verified my app this morning, so the requests for secondary applications are now rolling in. So far nobody has outright rejected me, which I'm enjoying while it lasts. For secondaries, schools expect me to pay them about $100 apiece, and write one or more essays (how will you add diversity to our class? when have you experienced adversity and how did you overcome it?). The goal here is to get at least one school to ask me to interview. Schools have already started interviewing applicants, and will continue to do so through March or April.
Here's the list of schools that have asked me to do a secondary so far. None of these schools did any screening yet.
1. George Washington
2. Boston
3. Dartmouth
4. New York Medical College
...and these just came today:
5. Virginia Commonwealth
6. U of Wisconsin
A great deal of this process is emotionally uncomfortable: am I getting in? where will I be living a year from now? what if I don't (can't finish the thought!)... So I appreciate, very much, the support I've been receiving from you (yes you). Just being asked about how it's going is helpful.
Further bulletins as events warrant.
